About the Job
This position is in the Secretariat for the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and for the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (Ozone Secretariat) at the Nairobi duty station. Project results will lead to enhanced capacity of the Ozone Secretariat in dealing with compliance and policy issues, support parties’ efforts in implementing the Montreal Protocol and enhance collaboration with partners in the area of climate action and environmental protection.
Responsibilities
Undertake research on issues related to the legal provisions of the Protocol and their implementation.
Provide substantive support to the Secretariat team supporting the Implementation Committee for the preparation of Committee meetings.
Coordinate the development of an online toolkit of policy options for promotion of energy efficiency in the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump sector, which will be part of a policy toolkit for sustainable cooling to be developed in coordination with a number of partners.
Coordinate the expansion of the existing online exhibition on sustainable cold chains into an atlas of sustainable cold chain solutions with inclusion of new entries in consultation with partners (FAO and Cool Coalition), validation of entries with the partners or proponents of sustainable cold chain solutions, coordination of the expanded layout with the Ozone Secretariat’s web designer among other tasks.
Contribute to the development and fundraising for the sustainable cooling and lifestyles communication campaign.
Perform other duties as required, including servicing of the Montreal Protocol’s global meetings.
Requirements
Bachelor degree or equivalent in environmental law or policy, public policy, environmental studies.
At least 3 years of experience in the field of environmental and public policy, and/or law and/or programme management in the environmental field.
Experience working in the UN or other international development organization is an advantage.
Excellent research, drafting and reporting skills.
Accuracy and professionalism in preparing and editing documents, including official documents for meetings.
Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing.
Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.
Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment.
Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, among others), email, and internet.
Familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment.
Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.
Fluent in English.
Working knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
